Rachel Alexandra
Medaglia d'Oro - Lotta Kim by Roar
Rachel Alexandra is an extraordinary American Thoroughbred racehorse who captivated the racing world with her remarkable talent and competitive spirit. Foaled in 2006, she was bred by Dolphus Morrison and initially trained by Hal Wiggins before being purchased by Jess Jackson’s Stonestreet Stables and transferred to trainer Steve Asmussen.
Rachel Alexandra’s career reached its pinnacle during her historic three-year-old season in 2009. After dominating her fellow fillies with an eye-popping 20 1/4 length victory in the Kentucky Oaks, she was sold to new connections who made the bold decision to enter her against male horses in the Preakness Stakes. Rachel Alexandra rose to the challenge, becoming the first filly to win the Preakness since 1924. Her campaign continued with victories against male horses in the Haskell Invitational and the Woodward Stakes, the latter making her the first female to win this prestigious race against older male competitors. These accomplishments earned her the 2009 Horse of the Year title, a rare honor for a filly.
Known for her striking bay coat with a distinctive white star and aggressive front-running style, Rachel Alexandra combined speed, stamina, and sheer determination. She retired with a record of 13 wins from 19 starts and earnings over $3.5 million. Her courage in taking on and defeating male horses multiple times has secured her place as one of the greatest fillies in American racing history. After her racing career, she became a broodmare at Stonestreet Farm, producing several foals. Rachel Alexandra was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 2016, cementing her legacy as one of the most exceptional racehorses of the modern era.
