Seattle Slew was an exceptional American Thoroughbred racehorse who achieved legendary status in the sport. Foaled in 1974, he was bred by Ben S. Castleman and purchased for the modest sum of $17,500 as a yearling by Karen and Mickey Taylor, in partnership with Jim and Sally Hill. He was trained by William H. Turner Jr., and later by Douglas Peterson.
Seattle Slew’s racing career was marked by historic achievements. In 1977, he became the tenth horse to win the American Triple Crown, capturing the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes. What set Seattle Slew apart was that he accomplished this feat while remaining undefeated, becoming the first and only horse to win the Triple Crown with an unblemished record. His dominance extended beyond the Triple Crown races, as he won 14 of his 17 career starts. Seattle Slew was known for his speed, stamina, and fighting spirit, often winning his races from the front.
After his Triple Crown victory, Seattle Slew continued to race as a four-year-old, adding more prestigious wins to his record, including a memorable victory in the Marlboro Cup where he defeated the talented Affirmed. He was named Horse of the Year in 1977 and champion older male in 1978. Following his retirement from racing, Seattle Slew became an influential sire, producing over 100 stakes winners including A.P. Indy, who himself became a breeding powerhouse. Seattle Slew’s impact on the Thoroughbred breed has been long-lasting, with his descendants continuing to excel in racing at the highest levels. His combination of racing excellence and breeding success has cemented his place as one of the greatest Thoroughbreds in American racing history.
