A.P. Indy

Seattle Slew - Weekend Surprise by Secretariat

A.P. Indy was an exceptional American Thoroughbred racehorse who left an indelible mark on the racing sport, both on the track and in the breeding of future generations of racehorses. Foaled in 1989, he was bred by William Farish III and William Kilroy, and raced for Tomonori Tsurumaki under the training of Neil Drysdale.

A.P. Indy’s racing career, though relatively brief, was highly successful. As a three-year-old in 1992, he won the Santa Anita Derby and was favored to win the Kentucky Derby, but was scratched on the morning of the race due to a foot bruise. He bounced back to win the Belmont Stakes and later captured the Breeders’ Cup Classic, securing his position as one of the top horses of his generation. These victories, along with others, earned him the Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year in 1992.

However, A.P. Indy’s greatest impact on the sport came after his retirement from racing. He became one of the most influential sires of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Standing at Lane’s End Farm, he sired numerous champions and top performers, including Bernardini, Rags to Riches, and Mineshaft. A.P. Indy was the leading sire in North America in 2003 and 2006, and he also became a notable sire of sires, with his male-line descendants continuing to influence the breed. His combination of speed, stamina, and classic American bloodlines made him a cornerstone of Thoroughbred breeding for decades. A.P. Indy’s legacy in both racing and breeding has secured his place as one of the most important Thoroughbreds of the modern era.
