Elmhurst
Wild Again - Mimbet by Raise A Native
Elmhurst was a notable American Thoroughbred racehorse who achieved his greatest success as a sprinter in the mid-1990s. Foaled in 1990, Elmhurst was bred by Brookside Farm and initially raced for Allen Paulson before being claimed by trainer Jenine Sahadi for $50,000 in 1995.
Elmhurst’s career is particularly remembered for his upset victory in the 1997 Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Hollywood Park. As a 16-1 longshot, he defeated a strong field of sprinters, including the favored Honour and Glory. This win was significant not only for Elmhurst but also for his trainer Jenine Sahadi, who became the first woman to train a Breeders’ Cup winner. Throughout his career, Elmhurst competed primarily in sprint races, showing a particular aptitude for shorter distances. While he may not have achieved the same level of fame as some of the legendary horses of his era, his Breeders’ Cup victory ensured his place in racing history. Elmhurst’s career demonstrated the potential for less heralded horses to achieve significant success in top-level competitions, adding to the unpredictable and exciting nature of horse racing.
