Medina Spirit
Protonico - Mongolian Changa by Brilliant Speed
Medina Spirit was a notable American Thoroughbred racehorse who gained both fame and controversy in his brief but impactful career. Foaled in 2018, he was owned by Amr Zedan.
Medina Spirit’s career was defined by his performance in the 2021 Triple Crown races, particularly the Kentucky Derby. He won the Kentucky Derby in May 2021. However, this win became the center of controversy when Medina Spirit tested positive for betamethasone, a prohibited substance on race day. The situation led to ongoing legal battles and discussions about medication rules in horse racing. Despite the controversy, Medina Spirit’s on-track performances were impressive. He finished third in the Preakness Stakes and had several other notable wins, including the Awesome Again Stakes. Tragically, Medina Spirit’s career and life were cut short when he died suddenly during a workout in December 2021, at just three years old. The cause was later determined to be a heart attack. His career, while brief, sparked significant debate within the racing community about equine welfare. Medina Spirit’s story remains a complex and controversial chapter in recent racing history, highlighting both the thrills and challenges of the sport.
