California Chrome
Lucky Pulpit - Love the Chase by Not For Love
California Chrome is a remarkable American Thoroughbred racehorse who captured the hearts of racing fans with his compelling rags-to-riches story. Born in 2011 to humble beginnings, he was bred by Steve Coburn and Perry Martin for just $10,500, a fraction of the cost of most top racehorses. Trained by Art Sherman, California Chrome rose to prominence in 2014 when he won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, igniting hopes for the first Triple Crown winner since 1978. Although he fell short in the Belmont Stakes, finishing fourth, his performances throughout the year earned him the prestigious American Horse of the Year title.
Despite the Belmont setback, California Chrome’s career continued to flourish. He went on to win several major races, including the Dubai World Cup in 2016, which made him the highest-earning North American racehorse in history at the time. Known for his chestnut coat and distinctive white blaze, California Chrome became a fan favorite not just for his racing prowess but also for his spirited personality. His success story inspired many in the racing community, proving that exceptional talent can emerge from modest beginnings. After retiring from racing, he began a new chapter as a breeding stallion, leaving a lasting impact on the sport of horse racing.
