Citation

Bull Lea - Hydroplane by Hyperion

Citation was an exceptional American Thoroughbred racehorse who dominated the racing scene in the late 1940s. Foaled in 1945, he was owned by Calumet Farm and trained by the renowned horseman Ben A. Jones. Citation’s crowning achievement came in 1948 when he became the eighth horse to win the American Triple Crown, capturing the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes. His Triple Crown victory was part of an incredible 16-race winning streak that spanned from 1947 to 1948, demonstrating his remarkable consistency and talent.

Citation’s accomplishments extended well beyond his Triple Crown win. He was named Horse of the Year in both 1947 and 1948, and his career statistics are truly impressive. He won 32 of his 45 starts, finished second in 10 races, and third in two. In 1951, Citation became the first horse to surpass $1 million in career earnings, a testament to his longevity and success on the track. Known for his versatility, Citation could win at various distances and track conditions, cementing his reputation as one of the greatest racehorses of all time. After retiring from racing, he had a successful career as a breeding stallion, contributing his exceptional genes to future generations of racehorses.
