Whirlaway
Blenheim - Dustwhirl by Sweep
Whirlaway was a remarkable American Thoroughbred racehorse who achieved fame in the early 1940s. Foaled in 1938, he was bred and owned by Calumet Farm and trained by the legendary Ben A. Jones. Whirlaway’s most notable accomplishment came in 1941 when he became the fifth horse to win the American Triple Crown, capturing the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes. His Kentucky Derby victory was particularly impressive and historic, as he set a track record that stood for 21 years.
Known for his distinctive long tail and his tendency to run erratically, Whirlaway earned the nickname “Mr. Longtail” and was often described as temperamental. Despite these quirks, he was a formidable competitor on the track. Beyond his Triple Crown success, Whirlaway was named Horse of the Year in both 1941 and 1942. He competed for four seasons, amassing a record of 32 wins from 60 starts and becoming the first horse to earn over $500,000 in prize money. After his racing career, Whirlaway stood at stud but was not as successful in breeding as he had been on the track. Nevertheless, his racing achievements secured his place as one of the great Thoroughbreds of his era.
