War Emblem
Our Emblem - Sweetest Lady
War Emblem was a notable American Thoroughbred racehorse who achieved significant success in 2002 before his career took several unexpected turns. Foaled in 1999, he was bred by Robert B. and Beverly J. Lewis and initially trained by Frank Brothers before being purchased by Prince Ahmed Salman’s The Thoroughbred Corporation and transferred to trainer Bob Baffert.
War Emblem’s rise to prominence was rapid and dramatic. After being purchased in April 2002, he won the Illinois Derby and then captured the Kentucky Derby in impressive fashion, going wire to wire and winning by four lengths. He followed this with a victory in the Preakness Stakes, setting up what appeared to be a promising Triple Crown bid. However, his chances at history were dashed in the Belmont Stakes when he stumbled badly at the start of the race, ultimately finishing eighth. This stumble at the gate denied him what many believed was a legitimate chance at the Triple Crown.
War Emblem’s career continued after his Triple Crown disappointment, but was marked by inconsistency and injury. He retired with a record of 7 wins from 13 starts and earnings of over $3.4 million. War Emblem’s bold front-running style and his dramatic 2002 Triple Crown campaign have secured his place as one of the more memorable racehorses of the early 21st century.
