Zenyatta

Street Cry - Vertigineux by Kris S.

Zenyatta is an extraordinary American Thoroughbred racehorse who captivated the racing world with her remarkable talent and dramatic racing style. Foaled in 2004, she was bred by Maverick Production Limited and raced for owners Jerry and Ann Moss under the training of John Shirreffs.

Zenyatta’s career was defined by her incredible winning streak and her unique come-from-behind racing style. She won her first 19 races consecutively, a modern-day record for top-level North American horses. This streak included victories in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic in 2008 and the Breeders’ Cup Classic in 2009, making her the first mare to win the Classic. Her win in the 2009 Classic, where she defeated a field of top male horses, is considered one of the greatest performances in Breeders’ Cup history. Zenyatta’s only career loss came in her final race, the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic, where she finished second by a head after a thrilling late charge. Throughout her career, Zenyatta was known for her dramatic racing style, often trailing the field for much of the race before unleashing a powerful closing run. This approach, combined with her imposing physical presence and engaging personality, made her a fan favorite and earned her the nickname “Queen Z”. Zenyatta was named American Horse of the Year in 2010 and was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 2016. Her impact on the sport extended beyond her race record, as she became a cultural icon and helped attract new fans to horse racing.
