Secretariat
Bold Ruler - Somethingroyal by Princequillo
Secretariat was an exceptional American Thoroughbred racehorse widely regarded as one of the greatest racehorses in history. Foaled in 1970, he was bred by Christopher Chenery’s Meadow Stable and trained by Lucien Laurin. Nicknamed “Big Red” for his chestnut coat, Secretariat captured the imagination of the American public with his remarkable speed, power, and charisma.
Secretariat’s crowning achievement came in 1973 when he became the ninth horse to win the American Triple Crown. His performances in these races were nothing short of spectacular. He set speed records in all three races – the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes – with his Belmont victory being particularly astonishing. In the Belmont, Secretariat won by an unprecedented 31 lengths, setting a track record that still stands today. Beyond the Triple Crown, he won 16 of his 21 career starts, was named Horse of the Year at ages two and three, and set or equaled five track records. After his racing career, Secretariat became a successful breeding stallion, siring notable champions. His impact on the sport was so significant that he was the subject of numerous books and a Disney film. Secretariat’s combination of speed, stamina, and star quality cemented his place as a cultural icon and one of the most celebrated athletes in American history.
