Rags to Riches
A.P. Indy - Better Than Honour
Rags to Riches (February 27, 2004 – November 24, 2025) was an exceptional American Thoroughbred racehorse who achieved historic success in 2007. Foaled in 2005, she was bred by Skara Glen Stables and owned by Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith. She was trained by Todd Pletcher, one of racing’s most accomplished trainers.
Rags to Riches’ career reached its pinnacle during her three-year-old season when she made history in the Belmont Stakes. After winning the Kentucky Oaks against her fellow fillies, she made the bold move to compete against colts in the Belmont Stakes. In a thrilling stretch duel with the Kentucky Derby winner Curlin, Rags to Riches prevailed by a head, becoming the first filly to win the Belmont Stakes in 102 years, since Tanya in 1905. This remarkable achievement secured her place in racing history and demonstrated her exceptional talent and determination.
Beyond her historic Belmont victory, Rags to Riches showed consistent excellence throughout her career. She won the Las Flores Handicap and finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Classic against older males, further proving her ability to compete at the highest level. Her career was unfortunately shortened by injuries, but she retired with a record of 6 wins from 10 starts and earnings over $1.3 million. Rags to Riches was named the 2007 Champion Three-Year-Old Filly and earned an Eclipse Award for her outstanding season. After her racing career, she became a broodmare, carrying on the bloodlines of her sire A.P. Indy. Her courage in taking on and defeating male horses in one of racing’s most prestigious races has ensured her lasting legacy as one of the great fillies in American racing history.
