Nasrullah
Nearco - Mumtaz Begum by Blenheim
Nasrullah was a highly influential Thoroughbred stallion who, although not as well-known for his racing career, left an indelible mark on the breed through his offspring. Foaled in 1940 in Ireland, Nasrullah was bred by the Aga Khan III and later sold to American breeder A.B. “Bull” Hancock Jr. of Claiborne Farm. As a racehorse, Nasrullah showed promise, winning several races in England, including the Champion Stakes, but his true legacy was realized in his role as a breeding stallion.
After being imported to the United States in 1950, Nasrullah became one of the most influential sires of the 20th century. He sired numerous champions and top performers, including Bold Ruler (sire of Secretariat), Never Bend, and Nashua. Nasrullah was the leading sire in North America five times between 1955 and 1962, a testament to the quality and consistency of his offspring. His impact on the breed extended globally, with his descendants achieving success in major races worldwide. Nasrullah’s genetic influence continues to be felt in modern Thoroughbred pedigrees, cementing his status as one of the most important stallions in the history of the breed.
